Two weeks after Bastille Day, another celebration across the pond

Yea, yea, yea, so Bastille Day was cool and what not.  A toast to “Liberté, Égalité, and Fraternité.”  Moet & Chandon to all!  Two weeks later, though, the Brits are raising their own glasses to mark another kind of celebration:  2 years to London 2012!  Cheers!!

On Tuesday, July 27th, the UK will celebrate two years until the start of the 2012 London Summer Olympic Games.  Considering the final two competitors for the 2012 bid were Paris and London, this is also an excellent opportunity for London to say “Eat your heart out, Bastille Day.  We may still have a monarchy, but dang it we won the bid!!”  The celebration kicked off this weekend with “Open Weekend,” a UK-wide spread of events hosted by energy company BP (insert joke here).  Over 900 events took place all over Britain, and believe me there was something for everyone.  A quick sampling:

– Gold Medal Scavenger Hunt (predictable)

– Fire Fit Families Assault Course (practical)

– The World’s Most Extraordinary Mass Ensemble (presumptuous)

– Night Moth Hunt in Ulverston (…  )

Not quite sure how to top that last one, but I will certainly be celebrating Tuesday in my own special way.  Join me!
